Kelly Metz started with The Morning Journal, a Journal Register Company Ohio daily newspaper, on Election Day in Nov. 2009. While starting in a new position as a courts/government reporter on an election day might seem like a crazy idea, Ms. Metz learned a lot in that first chaotic 12 hours. After being selected as part of JRC’s inaugural ideaLab, Ms. Metz became a digital-focused reporter and was eventually moved to the role as digital editor. She also attended the Knight Digital Media Center's Web 2.0 Workshop then brought that training to the rest of JRC's newsrooms through a series of webinars.
When Ms. Metz decided to spontaneously move to Colorado, her JRC future did not diminish and she was chosen to be the first staff member for Digital First Media’s Project Thunderdome. Soon, she found herself deeply entrenched in the product side of Digital First Media as an Editorial Product Manager and has worked with at least one staff member at each property across the DFM footprint in a short time. Shortly after, she accepted a position as Chief GSD Officer for Thunderdome Features.
When Ms. Metz isn’t working, she is playing fetch with her yellow lab Boomer. She and her soon-to-be husband have invested in a home on wheels and travel the country.
Most of Ms. Metz's notable work is behind the scenes with the features team, coordinating efforts such as Oscars and Olympics coverage. She also wrote and curated a daily "5 things you missed" column related to personal technology and entertainment.
