Tom Meagher

Tom Meagher is the data editor at Thunderdome, leading a team of journalist-developers who build interactive web applications, support computer-assisted reporting projects in local newsrooms and offer training in data analysis and visualization.

Before joining Digital First Media, Tom was the data editor at The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J., where he led a team of reporters and researchers working on enterprise stories and presenting data online.

Tom has also worked for the New Jersey Local News Service, the Herald News in what was then called West Paterson, N.J. and the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World. His work at the Herald News as a reporter was honored with awards from state and regional press organizations, and the paper won the award for the best small daily in the state during his time as city editor.

A graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Missouri-Columbia, he lives with his family in New Jersey. A devotee of soccer in America and around the world, he supports Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Gaming the news

How we did it: Connecticut superintendents salary map and database

Last week, our Thunderdome data team launched an interactive database to accompany a group of stories for Digital First Media’s Connecticut papers. The project examined disparity in public school superintendent salaries. We wanted to walk our readers through the reporting and data collection, as well as the building of the map and database framework that sprang from the stories.
